Community Associations Institute (CAI) is pleased to announce the introduction of H.R. 3777, the Disaster Assistance Fairness Act, in the U.S. House of Representatives. The legislation makes two major changes to the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief Act:
- Makes essential common elements of a condominium and housing cooperative (such as a roof, exterior wall, heating and cooling equipment, elevator, stairwell, utility access, plumbing, and electricity) eligible under FEMA’s Federal Assistance to Individuals and Households Program;
- Makes all homeowner associations eligible under FEMA’s requirements for the removal of debris in the aftermath of a major disaster.
The bipartisan legislation is cosponsored by Reps David Rouzer (R-NC-07), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY-12), Nancy Mace (R-SC-01), Representative Greg Steube (R-FL-017), Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-8), Representative Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL-26), Representative Wiley Nickel (D-NC-13), and Representative Ritchie Torres (D-NY-15)
We ask that you take a moment to urge your Representative to co-sponsor this critical legislation in the House of Representatives AND ask your Senator to introduce companion legislation in the Senate. Help us pass this critical legislation to bring fairness to disaster relief for community associations today!
