CAI members are grateful for Reps. Wasserman-Schultz and Salazar's leadership and their continued commitment to condominium safety. Wasserman-Schultz’s district includes Surfside, Fla., where Champlain Towers South once stood. Since the partial collapse of Champlain Towers South in 2021, CAI has remained committed to advancing policies promoting structurally sound, financially sustainable, and resilient communities. If enacted, this legislation would expand and strengthen access to both public and private financing for life-saving structural and safety repairs in condominium communities. The Foundation for Community Association Research estimates there are 130,000-150,000 condominium communities in the U.S. According to the American Communities Survey, the median year of construction for homes in the U.S. is 1980. The Making Condos Safer and Affordable Act would provide access to low-interest, government-backed loan products, leading to safer and more affordable condominiums for millions of Americans.
Congress needs to hear from CAI members, the community association experts, to champion the critical importance of this legislation. We urge all CAI members and their networks to reach out to their members of Congress and advocate for their support.
