Restore Voting Rights to People on Parole - Tell Assemblymembers to Vote for ACA 6 and AB 646
Restore Voting Rights to People on Parole - Tell Assemblymembers to Vote for ACA 6 and AB 646

We need your support to end discriminatory state policies in California that have prevented people from exercising their right to vote! California can strengthen our democracy by passing legislation that will ensure everyone can have their voices heard. Our state has a history of racially discriminatory laws that have discounted voters of color dating back to slavery. In addition to excluding those with felonies from voting in the first state constitution of 1849, California failed to ratify the 15th Amendment until 1962 which would have stopped voting restrictions based on race. [1] The history of racial disparities in our criminal justice system has disproportionately criminalized people of color. African Americans are four times as likely to experience felony disenfranchisement as are white Americans. [2] This has led to decreased political power for black and brown communities today. Out of every four men who reenter society from California prisons, three are African American, Latino, or Asian American. [3] Their voices are not represented in the laws and policies that impact them.

At CAIR, our values include protection of civil rights and full participation in civic life for all people. Let’s stand together and tell our elected officials that the nearly 50,000 people on parole in California have a right to be heard. These community members have a right to fully participate in democracy! Assembly Constitutional Amendment 6 (ACA 6) will give voters in California an opportunity to choose to restore voting rights for people on parole on the 2020 ballot. Assembly Bill 646 (AB 646) will create parallel changes in California’s Elections Code.

ACA 6 was introduced by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty (D-Sacramento) and is co-authored by Assemblymembers Carrillo (D-Los Angeles), Bonta (D-Oakland), Gipson (D-Carson), Gonzalez (D-San Diego), Kalra (D-San Jose), Kamlager-Dove (D-Los Angeles), Mullin (D-San Mateo), Stone (D-Monterey Bay), and Weber (D-San Diego) and Senator Wiener (D-San Francisco). AB 646 is authored by Assemblymember McCarty (D-Sacramento).[4]

It's time to #FreeTheVote! Email your Assemblymember and urge them to support ACA 6 and AB 646!
