Reminder: Comply with health plan requests to update provider directories
Doctors of optometry  are required by law to respond to health and vision plans' requests to validate their information for their provider directories. It is important that you respond to these requests, as failing to do so will result in your name being removed from provider directories.

The passage and implementation of Senate Bill 137 in 2015 requires health plans to keep up-to-date, accurate provider directories. It also requires health care providers to correct or validate their directory information.

Most provider directory information is required to be validated by a medical plan or vision plan every six months. Plans are required to remove from their directories the names of doctors who do not respond to requests to validate listing information.

  Contact Lens Rule update
Thank you to everyone who submitted comments in opposition to the proposed FTC rule related to contact lenses. As you may remember, the proposed rule would require contact lens prescribers to obtain a signed acknowledgement after releasing a contact lens prescription to a patient, and to maintain it for at least three years. Here is a link to COA's comments. The California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons also sent comments in opposition to this rule. Unfortunately, attorneys' general from several states signed on to a joint letter in favor of the proposed rule. Notably, California's attorney general did not sign on in support of the rule.

  PQRS extension granted
Doctors have an additional two weeks to submit data for the PQRS reporting program by pulling data from EHRs, CMS announced Friday. The deadline for filing 2016 data was moved from Feb. 28 to March 13. Doctors who fail to submit 2016 data will receive a 2 percent penalty in Medicare payments in 2018.

In memory of Harue Marsden, OD, MS, FAAO
It is with deep sadness that we announce Dr. Harue Marsden, longtime COA Legislation-Regulation Committee member and past COA president, lost her battle with cancer on Thursday. Dr. Marsden was a dedicated volunteer and great advocate for her profession. She had a gift for breaking down the politics of an issue and giving it context. She was a decisive leader with a heart of gold. She will be greatly missed by everyone at COA.
