Several measures important to optometry have been introduced:

Scope of practice - AB 443 has been introduced by Assembly Member Rudy Salas to expand the optometric scope of practice. COA continues to negotiate the specific provisions of the bill with Assembly Member Salas. The measure was referred to the Assembly Business and Professions Committee. No hearing date is set.

COA is strongly supporting this measure which would expand learning opportunities by requiring children to undergo a comprehensive eye exam upon starting school. This bill is set for hearing on April 5 in the Assembly Education Committee.

Medi-Cal - AB 1092 has been introduced by Assembly Member Ken Cooley. COA supports this effort to restore Medi-Cal coverage of one pair of eyeglasses provided every two years to an individual 21 years-of-age or older. This bill is set for hearing on April 4 in the Assembly Health Committee.

Help COA fight online refractions - patient examples still needed
COA continues to seek patient examples that we can use in our fight to educate the public about the dangers of online refraction. If you have a patient between 18 and 40 who came to you asymptomatic, but had a life- or sight-threatening condition that you were able to detect during your exam, please report the case to COA. We need your help to collect these patient examples to help COA demonstrate the risks to consumers, the media and elected officials. Your patient does not need to have received an online refraction to submit your example.

COA has also developed a video and published other messages aimed at the public about online exams via social media. Feel free to share this video on social media with your friends and patients.
