Optometrist finds CNN reporter has astigmatism that online vision test failed to detect

On its website, CNN reports Dr. Tom Spetalnick found that CNN reporter Jacqueline Howard "had slight astigmatism" while administering a comprehensive eye exam, but an online vision test taken by Howard failed to detect the problem.

If you have a patient example of a problem with an online refraction website, please report the case to COA. We need your help to collect these patient examples to help COA demonstrate the risks to consumers, the media, and elected officials.

AOA fights to uphold optometry priorities during federal health care debate
The U.S. House of Representatives unveiled its designs on Affordable Care Act repeal and its replacement, the American Health Care Act (AHCA), and AOA is tracking its progression.

AOA is not taking a formal position but intends to follow the legislative maneuvering that could result in significant changes before AHCA is reported to the full House or Senate. Proactively, AOA is working to ensure optometry's priorities continue unabated in any health care law.

Meeting with congressional and administration officials, AOA continues to stress:
  • Safeguarding doctors' full physician recognition and inclusion in physician-level programs
  • Upholding existing laws that assure access to in-person, comprehensive eye exams, including the health plan-based pediatric essential benefit, and prohibiting discrimination by ERISA and other plans against doctors of optometry on the basis of licensure
  • Ensuring patients' safety from unsafe telehealth  services
  • Ceasing abusive, anti-doctor insurance plan policies, as reflected by the provisions of the AOA- and American Dental Association-backed, bipartisan Dental and Optometric Care Access Act

Read more about AHCA and how AOA's message is resonating.
