COA partners with Anthem and Peach Tree Clinics to improve diabetes care
On Saturday, April 29, COA, Anthem Blue Cross of California, and Peach Tree Clinics kicked off a new effort dedicated to improving care to patients with diabetes. We hope to expand this clinic day into a series of events to give diabetics an opportunity to receive a broad spectrum of diabetes care - including a comprehensive eye exam, lab testing, and patient counseling in one appointment. ABC 10 News covered the event.

This innovative collaboration grew from COA's leadership in forming a coalition of organizations that are interested in improving diabetes care and addressing the statewide epidemic of diabetes. We are reaching out to health plans to share innovative ways to improve care, recognizing that 55 percent of Californians have diabetes or are at risk. In addition to regular eye exams, part of the solution to improve diabetes care is better optometric integration into primary care. If you have been working on diabetes care in your community, let us know. Contact Kara Corches.

Optometrists required to verify managed care provider panels
A new California law requires all California doctors to confirm the accuracy or update practice information on all health plan provider directories - this includes vision care plan directories. Under SB 137 passed in 2015, if a doctor does not comply with the review and verification process, health plans are required to remove the doctor from their directories. Avoid being removed from managed care provider directories. Please respond when you are contacted by a health plan.

COA releases statement on House vote to repeal Affordable Care Act
Sacramento, CA - The California Optometric Association released the following statement from President, Dr. Sage Hider, OD, in response to the House of Representatives vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act:

"California's optometrists are gravely concerned that repealing the Affordable Care Act's coverage for five million Californians, eliminating essential health benefits including eye care, and slashing Medicaid will be detrimental to our patients' vision and overall health.

"Access to eye care is crucial for children with visual impairments to learn, and for adults to drive safely and work productively. Visiting the eye doctor is often the first place patients learn they have diabetes or high blood pressure. Decreasing access to eye care puts more patients at risk of vision loss and undermines California's efforts to reduce the costs and human toll of these deadly, chronic diseases.

"Optometrists are now counting on the U.S. Senate to protect Californians' access to health by preventing five million patients from rejoining the ranks of the uninsured and bringing Medi-Cal provider rates up from near-worst in the nation."
