CCA Oregon Magazine Goes Electronic!
It's taken us a while but CCA Oregon finally has an electronic news magazine.
In what is now our third year of operations we have relied upon three means of communications to keep our membership informed and up to date: The Ripple Effect; the CCAPNW Website ( www.ccapnw.org); and of course, local chapter meetings. In spite of these tools, your state board has repeatedly heard from members that they “don’t know what’s going on” around the state.
To make a long story short, your state board heard you. At its January meeting, it voted to combine the Communications and Marketing Committees. As its first priority CCA Oregon President Jack Smith requested the committee to bring on line an electronic news magazine - or Ezine - to provide members with a fast, inexpensive, and easy way to keep our members "in the loop." This electronic publication is the committee's response to that request.
Each edition of the Ezine will contain information that will include news items, links to other important sites, and probably most importantly, links to individual chapter newsletters. By providing your chapter with the means to reach out electronically to all CCA Oregon members as well as the general public, we have yet another tool in our communications arsenal.
The success of this publication will depend to a significant degree on each local chapter. Your chapter presidents have been provided with instructions, including a "master template", to help put together your own local newsletter. Your newsletter will be linked to this Ezine. The Communications and Marketing Committee will provide technical and editorial support to each chapter. To learn more about the Ezine and the local newsletter initiative, click here for more information.

Protect Our Salmon Act (POSA) Update
It should by now be clear to everyone that CCA Oregon and our brothers and sisters in CCA Washington are determined to see that selective harvest techniques are the only acceptable methods of fishing in our waters. This means shared systems like the Columbia River basin, as well as rivers and coastal fisheries unique to each state.
To keep abreast of important developments in this historic action, refer to the link provided on the side bar on the right hand of this page. Updates will be highlighted with a "POSA ALERT" symbol next to the link.

Plight of BC Sockeye Makes National News
(March 3, 2010)
NBC's Nightly News with Brian Williams laid out in no uncertain terms the gravity of the threat to PNW salmon runs.
In a story entitled 'The Plight of Pacific Salmon" respected journalist and avid fisherman Tom Brokaw lays out the plight of British Columbia sockeye in stark terms.
Although the main focus of Brokaw's story is on the impact of farmed salmon fisheries on BC's wild fish runs, the story is another reminder that concern over the status of wild fish is gaining a broader, national interest. It also features an interesting segment on a Seattle man's Green approach to farming fish.
For CCA members and friends who may have missed the story this link will take you to a short video. Please bear with any commercials that start the segment as they will only last for a minute or so.

What's In a Name?
Let's face it. Somehow the title Ezine just won't hack it. Seems like a good title ought to give folks some idea of what they're going to be reading about. "Ezine" is a type of publcation and not a name. And Orezine sounds too much like something that requires a doctor's prescription.
We thought on this for a while and haven't come up with much so far. An early entry was The Hog Line. This was rejected because (a) not everybody fishes from one, and (b) we want to be more inclusive, reaching out not only to fellow sportfishers but to the community at large - to everyone who has a stake in what CCA Oregon is working to accomplish. "The Hog Line" might have suggested to some folks that we were all about the care and feeding of a certain type of livestock. (Truth be told we have to confess to being somewhat attracted to this name. That's why you'll find it as a side bar title as a link to a column that we hope will fill out in the future.)
Past experience indicates that contests are a good way of getting people to sharpen their pencils and offer up their ideas. (Some "old hands" will remember that this is how The Ripple Effect got its name) . So, while we don't have the details yet, we will be running a contest to see who can come up with a good name for this publication. If you want to get a head start, go ahead and send your ideas to ccaorezine@hotmail.com .
We'll be glad you did!
