"Civilize It": A new USCCB Campaign on bringing dignity into the political process
November 7, 2019 by John Gonzalez

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops launched a new campaign for Catholics to take part in bringing a sense of dignity and respect to the political process. It takes to heart the following words from Pope Francis:

Although there are many reasons to be discouraged, amid many prophets of destruction and condemnation, and so many negative and despairing voices, may you be a positive force, salt and light for this society. Like the engine of a train, may you be the driving force leading all towards their destination. May you be sowers of hope, builders of bridges and agents of dialogue and harmony. - Pope Francis, Message during Apostolic Journey, April 29, 2017

The campaign starts by visiting the We are Salt and Light webpage and taking a pledge promising to engage in the following commitments:
  1. Civility: To recognize the human dignity of those with whom I disagree, treat others with respect, and rise above attacks when directed at me.
  2. Clarity: To root my political viewpoints in the Gospel and a well formed conscience, which involves prayer, conversation, study and listening. I will stand up for my convictions and speak out when I witness language that disparages others' dignity, while also listening and seeking to understand others’ experiences.
  3. Compassion: To encounter others with a tone and posture which affirms that I honor the dignity of others and invites others to do the same. I will presume others’ best intentions and listen to their stories with empathy.  I will strive to understand before seeking to be understood.

Once you make the "Civilize It" pledge you will have access to a number of resources including prayer and formation material for you to use and promote with your family or parish community.

Having taken the pledge I encourage you to take part in this campaign and help change the vitriolic nature of our contemporary political engagement.
