The above video was put together by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) to show how poverty makes itself felt in the lives of Americans who face financial struggles. The work of CCHD is to address the systemic causes of poverty and to do that we rely on the annual CCHD parish collection. The Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development takes place at the last week of November in Catholic parishes throughout the United States. The collection supports the Catholic mission of promoting community development by supporting local organizations that address issues that impact their community. Here is Brooklyn and Queens Catholic Charities works with local organizations like Churches United for Fair Housing and Cooperatives United of Sunset Park to support the issues of making sure that local residence have access to either affordable housing or decent employment opportunities in our community. We do this through local parish engagements with these organizations and financial support through our CCHD fund.As part of our evangelizing commitments we are called to address systemic or structural injustice as we find it in our communities. Pope Francis reminds us of this in his famous exhortation Evangelium Gaudium:
“The Church, guided by the Gospel of mercy and by love for mankind, hears the cry for justice and intends to respond to it with all her might”. In this context we can understand Jesus’ command to his disciples: “You yourselves give them something to eat!” (Mk 6:37): it means working to eliminate the structural causes of poverty and to promote the integral development of the poor, as well as small daily acts of solidarity in meeting the real needs which we encounter.
