With the current chaotic situation and in light of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of St. Oscar Romero of El Salvador I would like to share this reflection from the Justice for Immigrants (JFI) program of the USCCB. Let us call to mind that Archbishop Romero was a champion of peace and justice, he courageously used his voice to highlight grave injustices and violence inflicted on his community, and gave his life defending the protection of human rights and dignity of the most vulnerable. Let us honor his powerful legacy by assisting the community he sacrificed his life for by offering Parish Identification Cards to help bring assistance to the immigrant community in our parishes. The following message is borrowed from JFI (the Spanish message is below).
"The Catholic Church has long emphasized the importance of protecting human rights and human dignity. Pope Francis has been a tireless voice and leader in this respect, particularly as it comes to immigrants and refugees. In his 20 Action Points, Pope Francis calls all of us to welcome and protect all migrants and refugees, independent of their legal status.
Taking Pope Francis's words to heart, JFI has begun working on practical resources which help increase integration and protection of immigrants and refugees at this time. One such effort is parish or diocese identification cards. Parish identification cards (parish IDs) are one way in which parishes and communities across the United States can foster communities of welcome and help ensure the protection of immigrants in their community.
A parish ID is an alternative form of identification that allows immigrants and other community members who have difficulty obtaining or are unable to obtain government-issued identification to have a valid way of identifying themselves to local law enforcement.
The Parish Identification Card Toolkit contains information about what a parish ID is, why they are needed, and what impact they have on ID recipients and their communities. The toolkit also provides a general outline for the planning and creation of a parish ID program in your own community.
You can also view the Justice for Immigrants webinar on parish IDs titled "How Parish IDs Can Help Foster Communities of Welcome". This webinar gives a brief introduction and overview of parish IDs as well as shares the experiences of several different communities in launching their own programs.
