Support the Fiscal Cliff Task Force in the Final Budget!
CDR is strongly supporting a Senate proposal that would study the fiscal cliff faced by individuals receiving public benefits and propose potential solutions. This legislation had previously passed with bipartisan support, only to be vetoed by Gov. Hochul on the grounds that it needed to be done in the budget. It would bring together a group to study the many factors that lead individuals to fall off of public benefits, the impact that has on those individuals and the policy goals of the state, and policy changes that could eliminate the fiscal cliffs that people face. This legislation is vital for Disabled folks looking to protect Medicaid, housing, transit, and more. It could alleviate burdens related to asset limits, the marriage penalty, and sanctions related to raises in the minimum wage, among other things. The issue also has a direct tie to CDR's ongoing work to eliminate the subminimum wage.
