CDR continues its call for New York to end the practice of paying disabled employees a subminimum wage. The idea that people should be paid less due to a disability is wrong. This belief stems from deep-rooted societal biases against people with disabilities. Disabled workers need to be paid the same as non-disabled workers. Additionally, there needs to be increased training and workforce opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities. People with disabilities face greater difficulty achieving financial independence. Without being able to work and earn even modest pay, it makes it more difficult for disabled New Yorkers to be able to live independently. Being paid a subminimum wage makes it impossible to gain financial independence and access basic goods and services they need, affecting their quality of life.
