LA Secures Federal Funding for Comite River Diversion Canal

A Big Thank You to Sen. Cassidy and Rep. Graves.

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy announced $343 million would be going toward fully funding the construction of the Comite River Diversion with other funds going toward multiple flood protection projects. This is a major win for residents, especially families, of Louisiana.

Funding for additional projects that were announced:

  • East Baton Rouge Flood Control - $255M
  • Grand Isle, LA - $15M
  • West Shore Lake Pontchartrain, LA - $760M
  • Amite River and Tributaries (east of the MS River): $3M Upper Barataria Basin FRM Study, $3M
South Central Coastal, LA, $3M LPV GRR for levee lifts, $3M WBV GRR for levee lifts

Ensuring the completion of the announced projects is one of Cassidy's top priorities. He has pushed that Louisiana families in flood zones have waited countless years for flood mitigation projects such as the Comite River Diversion. Had these projects been executed years ago, thousands of homes could have been saved. However, Cassidy emphasized to the Corps that these projects need full funding so homeowners can finally have peace of mind.

U.S. Rep. Garrett Graves says some of the projects should kickstart within the next few weeks. He also predicts that all the announced projects will begin by the end of the year.

This is a huge win for the housing industry and homeowners across the state. Our working efforts for years with Congress has allowed this to happen. We strongly encourage our members to thank Sen. Cassidy and Rep. Graves on securing the federal funding to complete flood and hurricane protection projects.

Kindest Regards,
