Senators Becca Rausch and Cindy Creem in January sent a letter to the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) board of directors, urging them to eliminate sewage discharges into the Charles River. Representatives Marjorie Decker, Michael Moran, Amy Sangiolo, Thomas Stanley, John Moran, Paul McMurtry, Steve Owens, Dave Rogers, Erika Uyterhoeven, Mike Connolly, Greg Schwartz, Alice Peisch, Kevin Honan, Tommy Vitolo, David Linsky, Sean Garballey, Jay Livingstone, John Lawn, Jr., and Samantha Montaño sent MWRA a similar letter as well.
On October 29, the MWRA unveiled its legally obligated updated plan for addressing combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in the Charles River: do next to nothing! Rather than undertake the projects needed to end CSOs, MWRA staff told their Board of Directors that the best path forward is to continue dumping more sewage in the Charles River forever. Following a wave of public outrage, the MWRA Board of Directors tabled a scheduled vote on the proposal. MWRA has not yet indicated whether it will undertake a project to fully eliminate sewage discharges.
Please take a few moments to thank our legislators for their support.
