Bald eagles are vital to Massachusetts' ecosystems, yet in just two short years, three have died from poisoning after consuming prey exposed to second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs). Although the retail sale of these toxic chemicals was banned by the federal government a decade ago, they are still commonly used by pest control services, continuing to endanger predators that help control rodent populations naturally.
An Act restricting the use of rodenticides in the environment (H. 965 / S. 644) – filed by Rep. James Hawkins and Sen. Michael Moore – would be a first step towards a total ban on the sale and use of SGARs. Reducing reliance on these dangerous rodenticides will protect bald eagles and other wildlife while promoting safer, more sustainable pest management practices.
This bill needs support from as many legislators as possible to gain momentum at the State House, so ask your legislator to cosponsor H. 965 and S. 644.
