The use of artificial "deepfake" videos has dramatically increased in the past few years. These videos are artificially created images of real people. Unfortunately, these videos are often used to exploit people without their consent. While AI images can be harmless, they often depict people conducting inappropriate and even sexual acts, without the consent or knowledge of the individuals themselves. These deepfakes have been used in "sextortion" schemes and as "revenge porn," blackmailing the people depicted in the images even though the images are not real. These schemes have forced many to sell real images of their bodies online in order to prevent something worse from happening. The Take It Down Act seeks to criminalize the making of such deepfakes and end the online publishing of intimate sexual images without consent. This legislation will spearhead the criminalization of online exploitation and end the invasion of individuals’ privacy, property, and conscience.
