The Supported Decision-Making Agreements Act (HB 2609) recently passed out of the Kansas House of Representatives 122-0! It's now headed to the Senate. This bill would create a clear, legal way for adults with disabilities who need decision-making support to receive help without losing their rights.

We need advocates like you to speak up in support of supported decision-making agreements in Kansas! Please send a message NOW to urge your State Senator to support HB 2609!

Why This Matters and What HB 2609 Will Do

Supported decision-making agreements create a legal pathway for adults to choose trusted supporters to help understand options and make decisions about things like health care, money, education, or housing. The person remains in control of their decisions while getting the support they need from people they trust.

If the Legislature passes HB 2609, it will:

  • Give adults with disabilities a meaningful alternative to guardianship
  • Protect decision-making rights while allowing support
  • Provide clear rules and protections for families, supporters, and businesses acting in good faith
  • Complement Kansas' updated guardianship law and other legal tools, like powers of attorney and advance directives

More than half of the states in the U.S. have enacted supported decision-making agreement laws. Kansas families deserve access to the same common-sense, person-centered option.
