I don't know if you've noticed, but ads for the Gardasil HPV vaccine have been increasing and now parents are being encouraged to not only make sure that their daughters have the vaccine, but that their sons have it too.

Well, not so fast! I have collected information about this effort since 2007 when Texas Governor Rick Perry issued an executive order that started a firestorm across the nation:

"King Perry's intrusive executive order bypassed the legislature and the proper means of enacting a new law. In a political move usually reserved for tyrants and dictators, he has unilaterally decreed that all 11- and 12- year old girls shall submit to a controversial vaccine for sexually-transmitted cervical cancer, Gardasil. Since these children are minors and depend on their parents for their protection and well-being, essentially this is an edict for all parents to surrender their children to the state for medical experimentation."

Ultimately, Perry's executive order was overturned and when he was running for President, he admitted that he had not handled that issue very well. INDEED!

We tried to pass a bill to protect our children from this, but it was defeated in the 2007 legislature. However, the good news is that the mandate was never made here in Tennessee.

HPV vaccine carries 25% chance of lifelong sterilization, study finds

Granted, there is still a huge debate about Gardasil. Many deaths have been attributed to this injection, but even those have been debated. You can Google the issue and read a variety of pros and cons.

Cervical cancer is a serious situation, but it is my understanding that the easiest way to prevent it is regular pap smears when one becomes sexually active.

Having seen an increase in ads on TV for Gardasil for both boys and girls, I wanted to bring this issue to your attention so that you could give it some thought before you make the decision or before being pressured by your doctor to give it to your children.
