- More than 80 million Americans were enrolled in Medicaid or CHIP in 2024
- Medicaid is the primary payor for emergency department services, especially for children
- The CBO estimates that 7.6 million people would lose their health coverage if the cuts are enacted into law.
As a safety net insurance program, Medicaid helps vulnerable populations better manage chronic and acute conditions by enabling better access to primary care services. When patients better manage their health, they avoid costly and unnecessary trips to the ED.
Last week, the House of Representatives approved a resolution which included changes to Medicaid that will result in at least $625 billion in cuts to the program. This would result in nearly 8 million people losing their health insurance coverage through the safety net program, leaving these vulnerable populations with few options for care.
Contact your senators today and demand they preserve Medicaid and its enrollment to ensure the survival of emergency departments, rural hospitals and the safety net that nearly 80 million Americans rely on for their health care.
