The Nursing Shortage is Real. Title VIII Programs Provide Real Support.
Workplace Violence. An Aging Workforce. Overcrowding and Boarding. Anxiety, Depression and Burnout. A Lack of Investment in Education Programs. With many causes fueling it, the nursing shortage in the U.S. is very real and getting worse.

For 61 years, critical funding has supported nursing workforce and development programs under the Public Health Service Act, known as Title VIII. Together, these programs boost nursing recruitment and retention through scholarships and loan repayment, supporting faculty spots at nursing schools and filling gaps in underserved areas.

The Health Resources and Services Administration projects a shortage of more than 65,000 nurses by 2030, but today’s shortage is dire. Some projections reveal the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the departure of more than 100,000 nurses from the profession from 2020 to 2021, marking the largest single-year drop in four decades.

Contact your representative and senators today to urge them to cosponsor and support H.R. 3593/S. 1874, the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Reauthorization Act of 2025.
