California Assembly Bill 1883 (Bryan) is being fast-tracked for a floor vote and will severely limit the use of workplace surveillance, access control, and tracking technologies — even in emergencies. If passed, this bill would:
- Prohibit real-time monitoring of open areas and cafeterias, even during fights, threats, or theft.
- Prevent employers from requiring ID badges in rest areas, weakening access control.
- Allow lawsuits against businesses for using basic, widely accepted security measures.
- Apply to independent contractors, increasing risks for unknown individuals on-site.
- Create confusion around the use of employer-owned vehicles, phones, and laptops.
