Proposed Au Pair Regulations Could Significantly Harm the Program! Act Now to Support the Federal Au Pair Program
The U.S. Department of State recently published proposed regulatory changes to the federal Au Pair Program that would, if enacted, change this valuable cultural exchange program into a labor program, which was not the intention of Congress. The proposed changes would greatly harm the Department of State’s public diplomacy mission by drastically diminishing participation in the Au Pair Program. This is a long governmental process, and it is important to note that these are only proposalsthere are no changes to the existing regulations and obligations

Please add your voice to thousands of others and submit your comment now to ensure the Au Pair Program is not harmed and remains an accessible and affordable cultural exchange program! There is a 60-day comment period, with comments due on January 28.

We encourage you to keep the main points already included in the prepared letter, as they are vital for the Department of State to hear, and please ensure that the subject line includes RIN 1400–AF12 so that your comment will be counted by the Department. Please also add your own perspective, stories, and views as you would like. (Note that there is a 10,000-character limit for letters sent through our system.)

The Alliance for International Exchange supports modernizing the Au Pair Program regulations for the benefit of au pairs and host families. These proposed regulations, however, would reduce flexibility (for both the host family and the au pair), add new costs without updating consideration for the financial investments host families make, require new reporting and compliance, and create uncertainty, all of which would greatly harm the cultural exchange mission of the program.

We hope to work with the Department of State to modify all parts of these proposed regulations that would harm the program and ensure that any new regulations support the well-being of both au pairs and host families, while also setting up the Au Pair Program for many more years of enriching and life-changing cultural exchange.

Act now in support of the Au Pair Program!
