This week, both the House and Senate voted on measures related to U.S. military authority in Iran. In the Senate, a War Powers Resolution led by Tim Kaine and Rand Paul sought to limit the president’s authority to wage war on Iran. The measure failed 47–53 in a largely partisan vote: Rand Paul was the only Republican to support it, while John Fetterman was the only Democrat to oppose it; all other Democrats voted in favor. A similar effort in the House, led by Representative Tom Massie, also failed, 212–219.
Even though the measure faced steep odds, it represented an important check on presidential overreach and a clear signal that Americans do not want to be dragged into another war in the Middle East. The Resolution would have required the President to immediately remove the U.S. army from Iran, unless Congress explicitly authorized the use of military force or gave a declaration of war.
This outcome is deeply disappointing, and Congress needs to hear from us.
Americans have said for decades, no more taxpayer dollars for endless wars.
