In other words, this law prohibits 2.4M unaffiliated voters in New Jersey from receiving mail-in ballots. Instead, unaffiliated, undecided, and independent voters will be sent a party affiliation form, greatly hindering the process of voting by mail. Many independents register as unaffiliated voters simply because they wish to vote for the candidate and not the party. This action sends a strong message to unaffiliated, undecided, and independent voters that their vote does not matter.
It is simply undemocratic that the state coerces unaffiliated/independent voters into pledging allegiance to a party in order to exercise their civic duty.
With Independent voters representing 43% of the American electorate, we strongly oppose the disenfranchisement of these voters.
Please take the next 2 minutes to urge your elected officials to take action against this law and let them know that NJ law A3820/S2869 (1) rejects unaffiliated/independent voters, (2) fuels distrust of the state government, and (3) prohibits the full participation in the political process for millions of NJ residents.
