U.S. Senator Josh Hawley and U.S. Representative Diana Harshbarger recently introduced the Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act to strip federal approval from the dangerous abortion drug mifepristone. The bill would prohibit the use of mifepristone, remove its approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and classify distribution of the drug for abortion purposes as a violation of federal law.
The Safeguarding Women from Chemical Abortion Act would:
- Withdraw the FDA’s approval of mifepristone for abortion.
- Make distributing and labeling mifepristone for pregnancy termination violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
- Create a private right of action for women harmed by chemical abortion to sue manufacturers for damages.
