Contact your US Senators to urge them to vote NO on the SAVE America Act (S.1383)!
BACKGROUND
Federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections, and applies stiff penalties for violations of this law, including deportation. Moreover, Forefront's opposition to this bill is grounded in our democratic values and our mission to increase civic engagement, which includes voting rights. As Illinois' statewide association for nonprofits and grant-makers alike, Forefront envisions a society in which all people have representation, and we believe a healthy social impact sector is fundamental to a healthy democracy.
The SAVE America Act would do the following:
- Implement a national voter ID requirement that would disproportionately impact low-income individuals, seniors, people with disabilities, and rural residents.
- Create a poll tax by requiring documentation such as passports or birth certificates to prove citizenship.
- Eliminate vote-by-mail voter registration and disrupt online voter registration. Current IRS regulations allow tax-exempt organizations to support voter registration as long as such efforts support registration with any political party. The SAVE America Act would effectively end 3rd party voter registration because it requires election officials to review proof of citizenship, so no 3rd party groups would be able to collect registration forms with accompanying proof of citizenship or offer online registration. For nonprofits committed to nonpartisan civic participation, this could directly reshape how we engage communities in the democratic process.
- Require the presentation of eligible documents to register to vote in person, which would hurt those who have limited access to transportation, such as those with a disability, military families, women, low-income voters, people living in rural and remote areas, survivors of natural disasters, students, older adults, and Tribal communities.
- Criminalize poll workers.
- Mandate state voter purges that risk preventing eligible American voters from exercising their constitutional right.
- Pressure states to submit sensitive voter registration lists to DHS.
