Create an Attainable Austin!

On May 16, the Austin City Council is scheduled to vote on a series of housing reforms, including HOME Phase 2,  that would make it easier to build more homes across the city, allow for a greater variety of housing types, like smaller single-family homes, townhomes and cottage courts, and encourage transit-supportive density to help address our affordability crisis.

Please use the form on this page to send a pre-written message to your Council Member and the Mayor, urging them to approve these housing-related reforms to create more housing for all.

It’s a fact that Austin is in a housing crisis. There are not enough homes for all of the people that want to live in Austin, resulting in displacement and difficulty obtaining housing. The lack of housing has led to sprawl and traffic, making Austin less desirable for everyone. The Austin City Council is considering several code amendments that will help tackle Austin’s housing shortage. These proposed code amendments include reducing the minimum lot size for single-family homes, reducing compatibility standards citywide, implementing an equitable transit-oriented development (ETOD) overlay, and allowing electric vehicle (EV) charging uses in more zones.

These housing reforms will allow for more types of homes to be built across the city to address three critical community needs: creating housing affordable to first-time home buyers, gaining attainable housing for middle-income households and assisting existing homeowners like teachers, nurses, and government employees who need options. Benefits of these code amendments include:

  • More housing options for middle-income families and individuals.
  • Increased supply of housing, which would make buying or renting a home more attainable.
  • More people able to stay in Austin instead of moving elsewhere in Central Texas.

Email your Austin City Council Member and tell them to approve these housing-related reforms to help create more housing options in Austin!
