Firefighters put their health and safety on the line every day to protect our communities. The dangers of the job do not end when the fire is extinguished; they can stay with them their whole lives, in many ways. Repeated exposure to smoke, toxic chemicals, and other carcinogens released during a fire emergency puts firefighters at an increased risk of developing occupational cancers.
Access to regular cancer screenings and early detection is critical to saving the lives of firefighters.
House Bill 2826, sponsored by Representative Joe Ciresi, would establish a statewide Firefighter Cancer Screening Program to help eligible career and volunteer firefighters access cancer screenings.
This program will provide cancer screenings for the following types of cancers based on increased occupational risks: colon, lung, bladder, oral, thyroid, skin, blood, breast, cervical, testicular, prostate, liver, and kidney.
Pennsylvania’s firefighters should have access to health care that is directly related to the work they perform.
Please contact your legislators today and urge them to support the passage of House Bill 2826 before the end of the 2025-2026 session.
