Support a fresh start for survivors of human trafficking
The Iowa Senate is considering HF 2696. This bill will remove prior convictions and arrest records for certain offenses that victims of human trafficking have committed under coercion. The legislation has already passed the House.

This will help survivors by removing the barriers they face due to their criminal records, specifically in cases of housing, employment, and education, while also addressing the re-trafficking that can occur when victims are unable to move forward due to these barriers, causing them to go back to their traffickers due to the lack of options.

As Catholics, we believe that we each have a responsibility to fight against the violation and degradation of our brothers and sisters. We recognize and prioritize the safety and dignity of survivors, and recognize that forced actions do not reflect their true will.

We ask that you contact your state senator and convince them to vote YES to HF 2696, as it will allow victims of human trafficking to break free from crimes they were coerced to commit, in hopes of a fresh start to a life outside of human trafficking. Thank you.
