While players were issued rainbow-patterned hats for a recent game during the team's "Pride Night," (and in violation of their own rules) three San Francisco Giant pitchers wrote Genesis 9:12-16 on their caps, resulting in a formal warning issued by Commissioner Robert Manfred.
U.S. Senator Josh Hawley is demanding answers for the league's punishment of Christian players.
He wrote, “The league’s claim that it merely forbids “writing of any kind” on its uniforms does not survive a cursory review of the league’s recent history."
In 2020, MLB itself turned its uniforms and its fields into a billboard for political and social messages.
- It created jersey patches reading “Black Lives Matter” and “United for Change.”
- It authorized “BLM” to be stenciled onto pitching mounds.
- It suspended its own rules so that players could display progressive political slogans on their cleats.
- A Catholic player wasn't included in promotional materials because of his faith.
Yet when three players display a Bible reference, the league reaches for its rule book, according to Senator Hawley.
