Every child of God comes from a mother. Mothers create life out of their own bodies, giving us flesh, blood, and breath. On Mother’s Day every year we give gratitude for our moms, but if we look at our policies – the way our society cares for mothers and caretakers – we don’t see that gratitude reflected.
The United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of any high-income nation at 17.9 deaths per 100,000 births. For Black women, this crisis is more deadly with 44.8 deaths per 100,000 births,-- more than three times that of white women (14.2 per 100,000 births). Numbers show that this crisis is nearly the same as it was 20 years ago.
This is not just a public health failure, it is a moral failing.
But 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable—we just need Congress to invest in maternal health. The Momnibus Act is a collection of 14 different bills aimed at ending the maternal mortality crisis, including disparities among marginalized populations.
The Momnibus Act (H.R. 7973) includes bills that would support mothers by 1) making postpartum and breastfeeding moms eligible for food assistance, 2) studying the causes of the maternal health crisis to inform solutions, 3) funding organizations that work to address maternal mortality, 4) protecting moms and their babies from climate-related dangers and risks, 5) investing in housing, nutrition, and transportation for moms—and more.
By taking care of mothers, we take care of everyone. Contact your members of Congress to pass the Momnibus Act!
