The midterm election is now just days away. Our faith calls us to love our neighbors, uphold their dignity, and advance the common good. Voting is one way we answer that call. Health care, hunger, immigration, reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ equality, and our democracy demand our faithful participation.
With Election Day approaching on Tuesday, November 3rd, make your plan to vote and help ensure every eligible voter can participate without intimidation and have their ballot counted.
Our responsibility extends beyond casting our ballots. We must oppose efforts to intimidate voters, obstruct lawful vote counting, threaten election workers, or overturn legitimate results. Voters must choose their representatives, and public officials must respect that choice.
No one should have to choose between exercising their right to vote and fear for their loved ones. We reject any use of federal agents to intimidate voters or interfere with voting. We especially decry the use of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at polling stations. An immigration enforcement presence can spread fear among eligible voters in immigrant communities and mixed-status families.
That is why UCC advocates are encouraged to write to their members of Congress in support of the Protect Our Polls Act (H. R. 10497/ S.4845). This legislation would require the president to get congressional approval before deploying military, including ICE and the National Guard, to polling places.
Our faithful witness is nonpartisan; our commitment to justice is unwavering. Let us vote with love, stand beside our neighbors, and demand that every eligible voter’s voice is heard.
