Language Education Funding in Jeopardy - Take Action Now
Language education funding for Fiscal Years 2025 and 2026 is in jeopardy. The Department of Education just announced that it is delaying allocating to states the already enacted FY 25 funding for key language education programs, including the $2.19 billion Title II-A Supporting Effective Instruction State Grants, the $1.38 billion Title IV-A Student Support and Academic Achievement Grants,  and the $800 million Title III English Language Acquisition Grants. Even more concerning is that media reports suggest that these funding delays are already causing states and school districts to terminate contracts and consider staff lay-offs. There is also a fear that the Administration may decide to impound these dollars and not provide them to states and districts at all.

Further, the President’s FY26 budget has proposed eliminating funding for Title III and Title VI of the Higher Education Act, which funds both domestic language education programs and Fulbright-Hays study abroad programs. The President’s budget also proposes to consolidate into a single K-12 block grant $6.5 billion in existing programs, including Title II-A, Title IV-A (a flexible block grant), Alaska Native Education and Native Hawaiian Education, and slash total funding by nearly 70%.

While JNCL-NCLIS is working hard to ensure F25 dollars are allocated to states and districts as Congress intended and that all key language education programs are protected from proposed budget cuts in FY26, we need your voices to amplify these messages on Capitol Hill.
