Protect Haitians at Risk—Urge Senators to Support S.4814 and DED for Haiti

On July 27, following the Supreme Court’s decision in Mullin v. Doe, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) was terminated for hundreds of thousands of Haitian nationals. Yet conditions in Haiti remain dire. Those forced to return face political instability, displacement, and widespread violence. On August 23, for example, an armed gang carried out a massacre that left more than 47 people dead and at least 50 kidnapped, an attack Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski cited as further evidence that Haiti remains extremely unsafe and that no one should be forced to return there. The termination also has significant domestic impact. Many American communities relied on TPS holders, who have now lost work authorization, for essential health and elder care services.

At this critical moment, Congress must act. The Senate should pass S.4814, directing the Department of Homeland Security to restore TPS for Haitian nationals until 2029. The President should also use his discretion to grant Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to Haitians in the interim, which would generally allow them to remain and continue working legally here.

We write today with a request. We ask that you contact your Senators and urge them to: 1) back S.4814 to restore TPS for Haitians, and 2) call on the President to grant DED to Haitian nationals until legislation is passed.

Take action today: Urge your Senator to support S.4814 and restore protections for Haitians who cannot safely return to their country.
