URGENT: Call Your Representative and Request Action on Tort Reform Measure

Legislators One Step Away from Passing Medical Review Panels

Four days into the 2017 legislative session and already there is positive news to report. Senate Bill (SB) 4, legislation sponsored by Sen. Ralph Alvarado, M.D., which would allow Medical Review Panels to determine the merit of medical malpractice cases before they can be filed in court, cleared the Senate Health & Welfare Committee Wednesday, Jan. 4. The full Senate passed the measure by a vote of 23 to 13 the following day.

The legislation has now been received by the House of Representatives for consideration. However, the General Assembly is scheduled to recess for three weeks on Saturday, Jan. 7.  KMA is advocating for the bill, which is a KMA top priority, to be discussed and voted on by the House before they break. KMA needs your assistance on this urgent matter. Please call your representative, express your support for SB 4, and urge passage of the legislation prior to the three week recess.

KMA has long supported efforts to improve Kentucky's medical liability climate and that's why the Association has once again made tort reform central to its advocacy efforts in 2017. SB 4 is a critical part of that work and represents a significant first step in creating a more fair and consistent legal climate for Kentucky health care providers. The opportunity is now!
