Medical Cannabis
Action Alert
March 19, 2019

All legislation pertaining to the legalization of medical cannabis was defeated during this session. However, KMA expects this item to be revisited in 2020 and will continue advocating for further research prior to the enactment of any cannabis legislation. KMA’s official policy regarding use of marijuana for medical purposes is available here.

On Thursday, a Concurrent Resolution regarding medical cannabis passed favorably from the House Health and Family Services Committee. HCR5, sponsored by Rep. Danny Bentley, supports the notion that marijuana should be thoroughly studied prior to its widespread dissemination and use. Specifically, the resolution urges federal policymakers to "expedite research on the safety and effectiveness of the use of marijuana for certain health purposes." The resolution further states that such research could then assist the Kentucky General Assembly in developing "evidence-based and scientifically sound" medical cannabis policy. KMA’s position regarding the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes can be found here.
