Thank Secretary Ross For Protecting The Chesapeake Bay Menhaden
Recently, Commerce Secretary Ross sided with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) and the governors of the nine Atlantic states (including Virginia’s Governor Northam) in issuing a moratorium on menhaden harvesting off Virginia’s waters.  Unfortunately, this decision was made necessary due to the actions of one industrial harvester of menhaden-Omega Protein and their decision to disregard the 51,000 metric ton cap for menhaden harvesting in the Chesapeake Bay.

Menhaden are vital to supporting healthy populations of rockfish and other gamefish; in-fact some studies indicate the overharvesting of menhaden could be reducing the striped bass population by as much as 30 percent.  More importantly, overharvesting could jeopardize the ecological balance and imperil other fishing and hunting operations along the Atlantic seaboard and Chesapeake Bay.

Please take a moment to send a thank you to Secretary Ross, as his actions were not only prudent and necessary, they placed a priority on the health and future of the Chesapeake Bay over the short-term profits of one company.
