Last month, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 5, also known as the Reducing Fetal and Infant Mortality bill and modeled after Mississippi's Gestational Age Act, into law.

The new law, which was approved by both chambers of the Florida Legislature in two near-party line votes, prohibits abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy in the Sunshine State with limited exceptions carved out in cases that, for instance, find the life of the mother at risk. While HB 5 does not ban abortion outright, it still marks an important first step towards phasing out abortion altogether here in Florida, and reaffirming the constitutional right to life, from the moment of conception, at the state level.

The new law also expands the number of fetal infant mortality review committees across the state -- an important step towards cracking down on barbaric acts of infanticide.

"We are here today to defend those who can’t defend themselves,” DeSantis declared upon signing the bill into law. “And in just a minute I will be signing House Bill 5, which protects the rights of unborn children starting at 15 weeks. This is a time where these babies have beating hearts, they can move, they can taste, they can see, they can feel pain, they can suck their thumbs, and they have brainwaves. This will represent the most significant protections for life enacted in this state for a generation.”

The signing of this bill into law was followed by the unprecedented leak of a Supreme Court opinion in the landmark case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which saw a majority of Justices vote to overturn both Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey -- which would mark the most significant achievement for the pro-life movement in American history.

While, of course, this leak will amount to a historic breach of trust within the institution of the Supreme Court, it also suggests that, for the first time in decades, our courts will no longer acknowledge the phony "right to abortion" manufactured by Roe back in 1973.

And as an unabashed pro-life governor, Ron DeSantis finds himself in a unique position to protect innocent life even further -- from conception until death -- should the Supreme Court formally issue their decision soon.
