What is the HALT Drunk Driving Law? In 2021, Congress passed the bipartisan HALT Drunk Driving Act as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The law directs the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to create a rule requiring all new passenger vehicles to have built-in passive technology to prevent drunk driving.
Every year, nearly 12,000 people are killed by drunk driving, and hundreds of thousands more are seriously injured. Anti-drunk driving technology will prevent these tragedies before they occur. For more details visit madd.org/HALT.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) estimates this bipartisan law when fully implemented will save more than 10,000 lives each year.
