As State House leaders deal with the negative economic impact of social distancing policies associated with the Coronavirus response, Speaker Bob DeLeo recently reaffirmed his support for seeing his transportation bill become law. This bill includes millions of dollars in spending which the Commonwealth no longer has, as well as significant increases in both the gasoline and diesel fuel taxes. The Speaker even suggested he would be willing to extend this year's legislative session in order to ensure passage of his bill. The original bill passed the House of Representatives before the virus hit and many of the beliefs which underpinned lawmakers’ decisions no longer hold true. While this bill was a bad idea to begin with, raising taxes during the extremely uncertain times we currently find ourselves in would be nothing short of a disaster. If you agree, please email your representative to express your personal story for how you have been impacted and why you think raising taxes on gasoline, diesel and on businesses would be a bad idea.
