Gig economy services such as Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash work BECAUSE they allow employees to be their own bosses and manage their own work schedules. This arrangement benefits users by ensuring service when needed, as well as employees by allowing them to work at the times best for them.
Unfortunately, union bosses and their allies on Beacon Hill are trying to force these gig-economy workers to become full-time, unionized employees. This would force employees to work a fixed schedule as full-time employees, instead of only working when they had free time. This will lead to reduced options for both app users and employees, and entirely defeats the purpose of most gig-economy apps.
Fortunately, compromise legislation HAS been proposed that would give workers the benefits of full-time employment, while also allowing them to retain the independence that makes apps like Uber and Lyft work so well. Tell your legislators to support H.4375 or H.4376 to protect the app-based services and their workers!
