The Missouri Senate is considering a bill that would mandate age verification for online pornographic content. HB 1839, sponsored by Rep. Sherri Gallick (R – Belton), would require internet pornography websites to enact age verification procedures to prevent minors from accessing their content, and establish in law a monetary penalty for violations of the bill’s guidelines.
Despite the fact that it is a felony to supply physical pornographic material to minors, there is currently no similar bar on supplying internet pornography to minors because the law was first adopted prior to the invention of the internet. As it stands now, modern technology provides unprecedented access to pornographic content for both adults and minors. Restricting access to pornographic content will help keep this offensive and damaging material from reaching children, and the potential monetary penalties would punish companies that generate vast wealth at the expense of Missouri’s youth.
