Arkansas Rejects Pro-Abortion Ballot Initiative
The Arkansas Secretary of State this week rejected petitions submitted to place a pro-abortion measure on that state’s ballot this fall. The office rejected the proposal, saying that the abortion group did not submit all of the required paperwork with its signatures.
In a letter to Arkansas for Limited Government—the group spearheading the initiative—Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston said the group did not provide statements confirming that it had explained various requirements of the signature-gathering process to the paid canvassers and failed to identify all paid canvassers.
This lack of documentation affected 14,143 of the more than 100,000 signatures submitted, leaving the effort short of the 90,700 needed to put the initiative on the ballot. Representatives for Arkansas for Limited Government have indicated that they plan to challenge the decision.
This comes as multiple states, including Missouri, face similar efforts to enshrine abortion rights in their constitutions. Abortion supporters in Missouri have submitted over 380,000 signatures to put a pro-abortion constitutional amendment on the ballot. Local election authorities are currently reviewing the validity of the signatures. After that review, the secretary of state will determine whether there are enough valid signatures to place the petition on the November ballot.
During this review, the MCC continues to encourage the faithful to pray that the effort is unsuccessful and to educate their family, friends, and fellow parishioners about the dangers of the ballot initiative. Last week, thousands of people joined in the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage through Missouri as part of the Eucharistic Revival that will converge in Indianapolis on July 17. The U.S. Catholic Bishops called for the three-year Eucharistic Revival to renew understanding and belief in and increased reverence for Christ fully present in the Eucharist. Scheduled throughout the week were Masses, processions, shared meals, a service project to help refugee families, confession, and all-night prayer vigils before the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Bishop Edward Rice Gives Pro-life Homily
Bishop Edward Rice, of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, gave an impassioned pro-life homily during Mass at the Proto-Cathedral of St. Peter, at the end of the Midwest March for Life on May 1, 2024, in Jefferson City, MO. Italy’s PM Proposes Financial Assistance for Women in Need Who Reject Abortion
The government of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has proposed a “maternity income” bill to offer financial assistance to pregnant women in need who refuse to abort their babies. This measure would provide 1,000 euros (around $1,100) in monthly aid for five years to Italian women who decide to continue with their pregnancy despite their financial problems (to qualify, they must earn less than 15,000 euros per year). For each child after the second year, there would be a monthly increase of 50 euros, and for each disabled child, there would be a supplement of 100 euros until the child turns 18.
This is not the first time that Meloni has stood for life. In April, she approved a package of measures to curb abortion in Italy, including one that allowed pro-life volunteers to access abortion centers to offer assistance to pregnant mothers who are considering abortion.

FSSP Selects New Superior General
The General Chapter of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, which is currently being held at Our Lady of Guadalupe International Seminary in Denton, Nebraska, has elected Fr. John Berg as Superior General for a third (non-consecutive) term of 6 years. He previously held the role from 2006-18, and this upcoming change in office marks the fifth tenure of an FSSP Superior General since the order’s founding in 1988. The election of the superior general’s Assistants and Counselors is expected to follow shortly over the next several days.
The FSSP consists of priests and seminarians who pursue the goal of Christian perfection according to a specific charism, which is to offer the Mass and other sacraments according to the Roman Rite as it existed before the liturgical reforms that followed the Second Vatican Council. Thus, the fraternity is in communion with Rome, and uses the Roman Missal, the Roman Breviary, and the Roman Ritual from 1962, the last edition before the revisions that followed Vatican II. The FSSP as an order is responsible for the formation and maintenance of many of the Catholic Church’s “Traditional Catholic” communities. Within recent months, Pope Francis has held audiences with the leadership of both the FSSP and The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest, another Traditional Catholic order, thanking them for their work and encouraging them to continue caring for the faithful according to their unique charisms.

John Thurston, secretario de estado de Arkansas, ha anunciado esta semana que la iniciativa ciudadana que busca consagrar el “derecho” al aborto en la constitución estatal no ha reunido las firmas suficientes, por lo que no aparecerá en la boleta electoral de noviembre.
En una carta dirigida a Arkansas for Limited Government, el grupo que encabeza la iniciativa, el secretario de estado explicó que 14,143 de las más de 100,000 firmas presentadas eran inválidas (se necesitan 90,700 firmas válidas), pues habían sido recolectadas por personas que no estaban contratadas oficialmente y que no habían recibido la capacitación exigida por la ley. La semana pasada, miles de personas participaron en la Peregrinación Eucarística Nacional, que pasó por Missouri como parte del movimiento de Avivamiento Eucarístico Nacional, el cual culminará en Indianápolis el 17 de julio y que fue convocado por los obispos de Estados Unidos para renovar nuestra fe en la presencia real de Cristo en la Eucaristía. Italia propone apoyar económicamente a mujeres de escasos recursos que se rehúsen a abortar
El gobierno de Giorgia Meloni, primera ministra de Italia, ha presentado un proyecto de ley de “apoyo a la maternidad” para proporcionar asistencia económica a mujeres de escasos recursos que rechacen el aborto. La medida plantea dar una ayuda de 1,000 euros (alrededor de 1,100 dólares) al mes durante cinco años a todas las madres de nacionalidad italiana cuyos ingresos anuales no superen los 15,000 euros. Para financiar el programa, el gobierno de Italia plantea crear un fondo de 600 millones de euros al año.
Esta no es la primera medida en favor de la vida que ha tomado la administración de la dirigente derechista Meloni, pues en abril logró que se aprobara en el Senado un paquete de medidas para frenar el aborto en el país y que, dentro de otras cosas, permite que los voluntarios de grupos provida puedan acceder a los centros abortivos para ofrecer asistencia y alternativas a las madres que están contemplando la posibilidad del aborto.

Fraternidad Sacerdotal de San Pedro elige nuevo Superior General
El Capítulo General de la Fraternidad Sacerdotal de San Pedro (FSSP), celebrado en el Seminario Internacional de N. S. de Guadalupe en Denton, Nebraska, ha elegido al P. John Berg como nuevo Superior General para un período de seis años; anteriormente, el P. Berg ya se había desempeñado como Superior General de la FSSP entre 2006 y 2018. Nacido en los Estados Unidos en 1970, el P. John Berg estudió filosofía en el St. Thomas Aquinas College de California, teología en el Seminario Internacional de San Pedro en Wigratzbad, Baviera (Alemania) y se licenció por la Pontificia Universidad de la Santa Cruz en Roma, ordenándose sacerdote en 1997.
La FSSP, erigida canónicamente por el papa S. Juan Pablo II en 1988 y en plena comunión con Roma, tiene como carisma y misión particular ofrecer la sagrada liturgia, incluida la santa misa y el oficio divino, así como los sacramentos, en toda su solemnidad tradicional, según los libros litúrgicos latinos de 1962, es decir, anteriores a las reformas que sucedieron al Concilio Vaticano II. Recientemente, el papa Francisco se ha reunido con los líderes de la FSSP y del Instituto Cristo Rey Sumo Sacerdote, otra sociedad tradicional que celebra la misa tridentina, para agradecerles por su trabajo y exhortarlos a seguir cuidando de sus fieles sin abandonar sus carismas.
