These devastating cuts exacerbate the growing number of people forcefully displaced and increase levels of trauma, famine, and food insecurity and, likely, millions of deaths. The effects of such deep decreases in vital services both within the U.S. and globally will likely lead to millions of otherwise preventable deaths and will increase the potential for violent conflict.
As Congress begins the fiscal year 2027, it is a key time to urge members to support poverty-focused development assistance that reflects compassionate and Christ-centered generosity.
Faith reflection: God’s love is not neglectful. In the Scriptures, God calls us to unconditional compassionate generosity (Isaiah 58:7). Jesus repeatedly reminds his followers of their responsibility toward one another, especially in responding to basic needs, describing how God blesses and rewards those who are compassionately generous toward others (Matthew 25:31-45). God invites us to courageously love the way God loves us.
Action: Urge Congress to pass a moral FY 2027 budget.
