Liability Relief for Essential Businesses
We need your help. Congress is negotiating a COVID-19 stimulus package this week and they are currently debating whether liability protections for businesses from frivolous lawsuits should be included. Liability relief for businesses that have made efforts to keep their customers and employees safe must be included in that legislation.

Early on in the pandemic, the convenience and fuel retailing industry was designated as part of the nation’s essential critical infrastructure. Our industry has worked tirelessly to serve their customers and communities throughout the crisis, while also making significant investments to mitigate the spread of the virus in our stores.

Despite these responsible efforts, some lawyers are aggressively seeking plaintiffs to bring lawsuits against businesses such as the ones in our industry. Legal advertising by plaintiffs’ firms saw a substantial increase from 2019 levels. One firm even applied for a PPP loan and boosted its advertising spending from $50,000 per day to $300,000 per day during the pandemic.

It is increasingly important that Congress act to protect businesses like yours that have taken necessary precautions to protect their employees and customers while serving the country during the crisis. We need your help reminding your members of Congress that liability protections for essential businesses must be included in the next COVID-19 relief bill. Take action today and share this link with your colleagues.
