Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act
On August 5, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is scheduled to consider the Recognizing the Role of Direct Support Professionals Act (S. 3211).

This legislation would support the creation of a distinct federal Standard Occupational Classification, or SOC, for direct support professionals.

For too long, DSPs have been hidden within broad occupational categories that fail to accurately describe their responsibilities, skills, or importance. Without a distinct classification, it is difficult for policymakers to know how many DSPs are working, where shortages are most severe, what DSPs earn, and what must be done to strengthen the workforce.

The Senate passed similar legislation unanimously during the previous Congress. The upcoming committee vote is another important opportunity to move this effort forward.

We are asking every member of our NADSP community and especially every DSP to contact their two United States senators before August 5.

Please tell them what direct support work really involves. Explain why DSPs deserve to be recognized as a distinct and essential profession. Most importantly, ask your senators to support S. 3211 and encourage members of the committee to advance the bill.
