Horseracing Legislation Signed Into Law

The new law will be governed by Horseracing Safety and Integrity Authority (HISA), a non-governmental body to be chosen by a nominating committee. The HISA will have five members from outside of the horse industry and four from within the industry that no longer have any vested interest that could cause conflict. Ultimately HISA hopes to achieve an industry-wide standard that will curtail the use of illegal doping and other medications.

Activist Faces Scrutiny for Exaggerated Tales of Animal Abuse

Marc Ching, founder of Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation, is being scrutinized for his adoption stories about dogs featured by his organization. In the fall of 2020, he was charged with practicing veterinary medicine without a license, false advertising, and packing horse meat as pet food without a license. Ching gained notoriety among Hollywood celebrities and everyday Americans by sharing videos of abuse in Asian dog meat slaughterhouses, many of which now face claims of being staged.

Animal Welfare and Animal Ethics

We just want to give a shout out to Dr. David Beggs, and urge you to read this fascinating article. When we anthropomorphize and put ourselves too "into the head" of animals, our own desire to see animals treated kindly may actually lead to worse outcomes and greater suffering. Beggs' views mirror many of our own. Enjoy!

Exotic Pet Popularity Expected to Surge in 2021

Even throughout the pandemic, exotic pets were in demand from Americans stuck at home during lockdowns. A recurring theme throughout 2020 was the necessity for a well established and trusted community pet store that provides healthy animals, pet food, and expertise. All small animals are in high demand and these experts agree that the trend will continue now that families have gotten more comfortable with these special pets.

Puppies Safe After Transport Rolls Over

A puppy transport accident rang in the New Year in Utah, as a transport van carrying dogs from Texas to adopters in Oregon slid off the road and landed on its side. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and none of the dogs were hurt. Their accident highlights the burgeoning "puppy pipeline" that carries hundreds of thousands of dogs each year from states that underfund their animal control agencies to states whose citizens have solved their surplus dog populations by funding public education campaigns, providing low-cost spay/neuter clinics, and embracing responsible animal control policies.
