Support a moratorium for new prisons!

S.1979/H.1795 An Act Establishing a Jail and Prison Construction Moratorium, filed by Senator Comerford and Representative Tyler

This bill will:

  1. Give the Commonwealth a chance to shift spending priorities from prisons to people
  2. Give communities the opportunity to create solutions that address the root causes of incarceration
  3. Allow the Commonwealth to fully implement criminal justice reforms
  4. Pause new women's prison process to implement alternatives

Those who are incarcerated are constantly faced with the inhumane jail/prison system in the United States. Once put in these jails or prisons, they lose the rights and voice they had before. Instead of focusing on creating solutions, alternatives, or criminal justice reforms, MA is spending millions on jail/prison projects and maintenance. This bill, S.1979/H.1795 An Act establishing a jail and prison construction moratorium, will establish a five-year moratorium on new prison and jail construction and instead focus on the Commonwealth.

Can you take a few minutes to advocate for funding people over prisons?
