The SUPER Act would continue the Behavioral Health Trust Fund paid placement program for Master’s Social Work Students in Massachusetts, remove the exam requirement only at the Licensed Certified Social Work (LCSW) level of Licensure, and allow Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSWs) to receive continuing education credits for providing supervision.
There is misinformation that a compromise bill has been agreed upon and that is false. The SUPER Act is the only bill that addresses the behavioral health workforce shortage at the Master’s level of social work.
We are not proposing removing the exam for Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), nothing about this licensure level or the 3,500 hours of clinical supervision needed post MSW degree would change. The SUPER Act does not change anything regarding the clinical level of licensure and those who can practice independently would still need to take the clinical exam.
